WEATHERING PROJECT
PART I: PHOTOGRAPHS
You must take photographs
around Hampton (roads,sidewalks, cemeteries, parks)
which illustrate the various
types of physical and chemical weathering.
You must take two different
photographs of each of the following:
A. FROST ACTION
B. ROOT WEDGING
C. OXIDATION (be careful,
don't confuse lichen with rust)
D. SALT WATER OR ACID RAIN
EXPOSURE
A WORD OF CAUTION: To receive
credit, your photographs must clearly show the effects of the agent of
weathering in question. So make sure it’s great ! Each photograph must be
clearly labeled, giving the exact street location and explaining what it shows.
NOTE: YOU MUST BE IN ALL
PHOTOGRAPHS TO RECEIVE CREDIT.
PART II: EFFECTS OF EXPOSURE
You must visit a cemetery or
other area such as FT Monroe, or St John's Church where there are old monuments
made of stone. Find at least 5 tombstones or other monuments which are four
sided and approximately the same age. Determine the geographic direction
that each side faces, ie, North, South, East or West.Examine each of the
tombstones and record your observations about how each side of each one is
weathering. Put your observations in a data table. Which of the sides seems to
have weathered the most. Or, are they the same ? Include two pictures which
best support your conclusion. Based on your observations, make a conclusion (in
essay form)
concerning the effect of
direction of exposure on the weathering rate and/or type. Be sure to include
your observations.
PART III: WEATHERING RESEARCH
You must conduct library
research and write a report on weathering which includes the following
subtopics:
1. Introduction
2. What is weathering?
3. What are the types of
weathering?
4. What are the effects of
weathering? Include the conclusion concerning the effect of
direction of exposure on
the weather rate and/or type.
5. What are some benefits of
weathering?
6. What can be done about the
weathering that is caused by man's polluting of the
environment?
7. Can damaged objects be
restored?
