Earth Science Rounding Practice  Name: ____________________  Per: ___   Date: ________

Let’s Start With Basics:

    A) Unit Intervals:  Ex: 5.2638  =         5.    2     6     3     8

   B) Rounding to nearest tenth: Look at the number in the hundredth column.

If number is 5 or higher, raise tenth value by 1 & remove all numbers to right

If number is lower than 5, leave tenth value as is & remove all numbers to right

Ex (A) above: number in hundredth column is 6.  raise 2 to 3, remove 638. Answer: 5.3

  C) Rounding to nearest hundredth: Look at the number in the thousandth column.

If number is 5 or higher, raise hundredth value by 1 & remove all numbers to right

If number is lower than 5, leave hundredth value as is & remove all numbers to right

Ex (A) above: number in thousandth column is 3. leave 6 as is, remove 38. Answer: 5.26

  D) Rounding to nearest thousandth: Look at the number in the ten thousandth column.

If number is 5 or higher, raise thousandth value by 1 & remove all numbers to right

If number is lower than 5, leave thousandth value as is & remove all numbers to right

Ex (A) above: number in ten thousandth column is 8. raise 3 to 4, remove 8. Answer: 5.264

  E) Important Note:  If a calculation comes out even, you may need to add a zero(es):

      Ex 1: Round ans. to nearest tenth.       X = Y/Z. Y = 6, Z = 3.  X = 6/3.   Ans: 2.0  (not 2)

         Ex 2: Round ans. to nearest hundredth.  X = Y/Z. Y = 6, Z = 3.  X = 6/3.  Ans: 2.00  (not 2)

  F) Practice questions: Do on a separate sheet of paper.

        a) Round to nearest tenth:

           1) 12.451    2) 9.06    3) .617    4) 4.708    5) 8.    6) 1.009    7) 54.60     ) .05

      b) Round to nearest hundredth

           1) 3.879    2) 27.080    3) 6.499    4) 9.12905   5) .0046    6) 14.7    7) 1.00354

      c) Round to nearest thousandth:

           1) 6.5051    2) .89752    3) 9.4008    4) 15.40306    5) 2.0007    6) .6661    7) .2998

      d) Solve for X and round to nearest tenth: X = Y/Z

           1) Y = 14, Z = 9      2) Y = 11, Z = 14     3) Y = 39, Z = 27     4) Y = 82, Z = 84

      e) Solve for X and round to nearest hundredth: X = Y/Z

           1) Y = 36, Z = 35     2) Y = 12, Z = 13     3) Y = 24, Z = 88     4) Y = 798, Z = 51

      f) Solve for X and round to nearest thousandth: X = Y/Z

             1) Y = 7, Z = 24     2) Y = 19, Z = 47     3) Y = 63, Z = 36     4) Y = 22, Z = 7
