OPPORTUNITY TO EARN 3 GRADUATE EDUCATION CREDITS FOR “EARTH2CLASS WORKSHOPS FOR TEACHERS”

St. Thomas Aquinas College (Sparkill NY) can provide 3 graduate credits for participants in “Earth2Class Workshops for Teachers through “ GED 7201 Facilitating State Standards: Earth Science.” This program provides the opportunity to explore concepts presented in E2C Workshops more thoroughly, especially as they apply to the new state core concepts and assessments. In addition to enhancing subject content knowledge, participants will also develop new ways for implementing educational technologies into their teaching and examine other issues connected with new state core concepts and exams.

You can learn more about E2C at www.earth2class.org .

The Marie Curie Math and Science Center of St. Thomas Aquinas College (http://www.stac.edu/mcc/indexrev.htm) sponsors this program. Dr. Michael J. Passow will be the instructor. Dr. Passow is the founder and organizer of the “Earth2Class Workshops for Teachers at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory,” Earth Science teacher at White Plains Middle School, registered N. J. Professional Development Provider, and President-Elect of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. Educational technology applications will also be presented by Dr. Cristiana Assumpcao, who recently completed her doctorate at Teachers College, Columbia University, evaluating previous E2C programs for her dissertation topic.

Participants must complete 37 contact hours, which can be accomplished in several ways. All participants must be in attendance for the five workshops in January – May. These sessions run from 9:30 am to 12:30 noon. This accounts for 15 hours. Participants may be either at LDEO or our teleconferencing partner Passaic ETTI.

Themes and guest scientists for this semester’s programs are:

  • 26 Jan  Climate Part 1: General Patterns--Martin Visbeck--“Why Is Western Europe Warmer than  Eastern Canada? The Gulf Stream vs. Atmospheric Winds”
  • 9 Feb  Climate Part 2: Looking Back In Time-- Alexey Kaplan--“Developing Knowledge of Climate during the Past 150 Years” and Rusty Lotti Bond--“The LDEO Deep-Sea Core Repository”
  • 9 Mar Hudson River Studies-- Robin Bell--“Digging Up the Dirt on the Hudson River” and Alex de Sherbinin--“Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) DataBases”
  • 13 Apr  Exploring The Geology And Geophysics Of The Ocean Floors-- Christopher Small--“Remote Sensing of Our Planet” and Gregory Mountain--“Shipboard Studies of Our Planet”
  • 11 May  Water Resource Issues-- Upmanu Lall--“Case Studies of Water Resource Problems” {After this program, we will have a special kayaking/canoeing opportunity on the Hudson River in the Tappan Zee region just north of L-DEO.}

For those able to attend St. Thomas Aquinas College, there will be classes from 4:20 – 7 p.m. on the following Thursdays: 24 Jan, 31 Jan, 7 Feb,  14 Feb, 28 Feb, 7 Mar, 21 Mar, 4 Apr, 25 Apr, and 9 May (22 hours.) For those unable to attend meetings at St. Thomas Aquinas College, equivalent hours may be completed through a distance-learning format. This will include receiving information through e-mail, completing assignments based on readings and Internet activities, and submitting them electronically and/or by paper copies (faxed or mailed.)  Class assignments will lead to production of a teaching portfolio on which the course assessment will be based. The final portfolio will be due by 25 Apr. You can find all the information on the Distance Learning Course by clicking on the Distance Learning link in the menu at the top of this page.

Support from a grant permits the tuition fee to be only $575 (approximately half the normal cost). Payment will be due by Jan. 26, 2001 (in the form of a check payable to “St. Thomas Aquinas College.”) In addition, there will be a $65 fee to cover the costs of the Earth2Class workshops (payable to “STANYS/Westchester Section.)
