How Well Does the Reconstruction Work?
North-South Wind Component
This plot shows a test of our reconstruction of the north-south
("meriodional") wind component. See the last
slide for an explantion of what the various panels are in this plot.
Results from this test demonstrate that reconstructions
of the north-south wind component require many observations to produce
a good result. This reconstruction works well only in the North Atlantic
Ocean, where the ship network is quite dense. We are continuing to
improve our methods by using the satellite data to test and refine our
procedures.

Why do you think it is harder to reconstruct the north-south
wind
component?
The north-south wind component
varies on smaller spatial
scales than the east-west
wind component. You can see this
by comparing the upper
left panels in this slide and the previous
slide.
The smaller features in the north-south wind are more
likely to fall in the
gaps between shipping lanes.
