"Structure and composition of the oceanic crust "

Guest Scientist: Gerardo Iturrino

Dr. Iturrino will provide a summary of the history of ocean exploration that
has led to our current knowledge of the structure and composition of the
oceanic crust. He will review early and recent geophysical techniques that
have been used to understand the upper 6 km of the oceanic basement. He will
also present some examples of sampling techniques that have been used for
characterizing the nature of the volcanic basement and the importance of
knowing its composition and structure.

In his previous talks, Dr. Iturrino has shared what we have leaned about hydrothermal vents and presented a history of ocean drilling. For additional educational resources from the Borehole Research Group, click here.
