SPECIAL UPDATE ABOUT THE TSUNAMI RESPONSE FROM LDEO SCIENTISTS

ART LERNER-LAM, Center for Hazards and Risk Research at Columbia University and Associate Director, Division of Seismology, Geology, and Tectnophysics

LDEO scientists have been in the forefront of international response efforts to understand scientifically what caused the December 26 Sumatra earthquake and tsunami.

For online information about their findings:  http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/feature/2004/sumatra.html

MAYA TOLSTOY, Doherty Research Scientist, is the lead investigator of the acoustic seismology study of the Sumatra earthquake. Hydrophones were able to obtain vast amounts of information about this event, muh more useful than seismic waves because of the intensity and duration that caused P- and S-waves to overlap in complex patterns.
