Workshop 6 (May 13th 2000)
Earth View Explorer
EarthView
Explorer is an interactive, CD-ROM computer-based, learning tool developed
collaboratively by scientists at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and
Science Faculty at Teachers College Columbia University.
This sequence of two Saturday morning sessions will explore the
educational theory, scientific rationale, and curriculum applications of
EarthView Explorer. The participants are O. Roger
Anderson (Biology and Science Education), John Armbruster (Geosciences),
Kevin, Griffin, (Plant Physiology), Mike Passow (Earth Sciences Education) and
Ray Sambrotto (Biological Oceanography).
Session 1
Earth View Explorer (EV) is a novel, computer-based learning application
based on constructivist principles that encourages students to explore data,
invent hypotheses and test them, and in many respects inquire about their
environments as do scientists. The EV application contains four units: 1.
Geosphere, 2. Hydrosphere, 3. Atmosphere and 4. Biosphere. In the first session,
we will introduce the basic rationale for this curriculum innovation and its
use, and through group, hands-on, experience develop with the workshop
participants how to use the first two modules in teaching. All participants will
receive a free copy of the CD-ROM disk.
